News 27/08/98.... & the draw
The draw is due to be made at 4pm BST in Monaco on Thursday
27th August. News here as soon as we have it. Apparently it'll
be live on Eurosport.
The 6 seeded teams are to be Real Madrid, Lens, Juventus, Kaiserslautern,
Barcelona, and Ajax. Arsenal will be drawn in the same group as one of
these teams, but the draw will be fixed so that we avoid Man Utd. Arsenal
would have been seeded if Juve had not lost to Real Madrid in last
year's final. But there's
good
news on ticket pricing for Wembley (see also entry for 17/08/98 under
general info below).

for stuff about how the Spice Girls may disrupt our Champions League
campaign. I know there's a scouser and a yorkshire lass, and one who
presumably now has a soft spot for Man Utd. What about Baby Spice,
anyone know? I don't suppose they'll be particularly concerned about
the trouble their concert will cause us. Mind you, I guess the gig
was arranged when Arsenal booked the place so it's probably not their fault.

- 21/09/98 more good ticket news
We've now heard that the
people with restricted view tickets (see 15/09 below)
have been told by the box office
that there's no way they should have been given those tickets,
and they will be replaced. So the message is clear - if you're not happy
with your Wembley tickets get on to the club about it.
- 18/09/98 Arsenal come good
Credit where credit's due,
Arsenal do seem to be prepared to correct errors made in ticket
allocations.
The correspondent mentioned under 16/09/98 below writes again:
"I had a telephone call from the box office this afternoon, message left
on my answerphone to say that they will be replacing my 3 tickets for the
CL with tickets for lower tier at Wembley. Someone called Emma left the
message. So I guess if you complain enough and write, sending
the original tickets back which makes it difficult for them to refuse
you, you can beat the system. I recommend anyone who is unhappy with
their allocation to do what I did. Nothing to lose."
Another correspondent, who with his father enjoys adjacent season tickets
at Highbury but was allocated 2 tickets in different rows at Wembley,
has received a promise from Arsenal that they will be found new
adjacent seats at Wembley. As he puts it, "I could hardly believe my ears -
admitting a mistake, promising to put it right??!!
Would you Adam'n'Eve it!! They actually listened to and acted upon a fan's
complaint!".
What with this, and the success of the complaints to
Carlton, we'll have to be careful the power doesn't go to our heads.
- 16/09/98 Ticketing update
another correspondent writes:
"I have sent my CL tickets back to Arsenal in disgust at where I have
been allocated a seat at Wembley for the league rounds. It is way up
in the gods and with my eyesight I`d need binoculars to view the match in
comfort. The seat they have given me for the 3 games bears absolutely no
resemblence to where I sit at Highbury, which is what I was led to believe
would be the case. Whilst grateful that I don`t have to pay anymore for
a ticket, it nevertheless was a very big disappointment to receive my
allocation in the Upper East at Wembley. There was a letter which
accompanied the folder containing the tickets with the telephone
number of the firm in the midlands who were responsible for mailing
them out to season ticket holders. I `phoned them up explaining my
disappointment and they seemed quite sure that if I were to send them
back to the box office at Highbury with a covering letter outlining
the reasons for doing so, the club would almost certainly
mail out replacements to me. I sent the tickets by recorded post last
Friday, the day they were received and I hope and expect Arsenal to
exchange them for seats in an area more suitable for me. I did also
state that if they were unable to satisfy my request I would
expect them to give me a refund. There is no point in telephoning the
box office, its` a complete waste of time far better to write and keep
a copy, and if posting tickets back at the same time make sure you record it."
So, if you're really unhappy with your allocation, it might be worth
sending them back (if nervous about this, making it clear that you want the
tickets back if there is no possibility of being allocated alternative
tickets might help)
- 15/09/98 concerns over Wembley ticket allocations
It appears that the club's promise to season ticket holders over the
allocation of tickets at Wembley is not being honoured. The club said
that they intended to reserve the best 20000 seats at Wembley for the 20000
seaosn ticket (and bond) holders ("after allowing for UEFA requirements")
and yet some season ticket holders have been sent tickets that offer
a restricted view. We have heard from 2 season ticket holders, one of whom
has been sent tickets with "restricted view" written on them, and the
other has been sent tickets with "pillar in view". This is very poor show.
The club have been informed and it remains to be seen what they will do
about it. When we first heard about this we wondered if it was down
to Wembley's strange ticketing policy (sometimes the cheaper seats for
England games seem to offer a better view), but even Wembley tend not
to rate "pillar in view" as a positive feature!
- 27/10/98 League ranking rules
Where two or more teams are level on points, the criteria for determining
the ranking is as follows:
- 1: the greater number of points obtained in the matches between the teams
in question,
- 2: the goal difference resulting from the matches between the teams in
question,
- 3: the greater number of goals scored away from home in matches between
the teams in question, and
- 4: the overall goal difference within the group.
- Following approval from UEFA and the FA, Arsenal will be playing
their home matches in Europe this year at Wembley rather than at Highbury.
- This year the Champions League stays with the format of
previous seasons: 6 groups of 4 playing each other home and away,
with the top team from each group
going forward to the quarter-finals together with the 2 best runners-up.
Next season there are
plans to change it to 4 groups of 6.
