  • Arsenal once played Blackpool in Black and White stripes!

    Syd writes...
"Seeing the announcement that Blackpool will be playing us at Highbury [FA Cup 3rd round 1999-2000] reminded me of the game I witnessed in 1953 in which Blackpool beat us 2-1.
It was the F.A.Cup quarter final and because of the color clash, Arsenal wore black and white striped shirts with white shorts. The game was was a thriller with Stanley Mathews playing. The attendance was 60,000 plus as we were all standing at that time in the terraces. The game was a thriller, Blackpool scored the first goal but Arsenal equalised through a rare Jimmy Logie goal. But before our cheers had died Blackpool scored again through a heroic effort by Alan Brown, who had his leg broken in the process when he collided with Arsenal goalie Jack Kelsey."

  • Blackpool claim that Arsenal stole a trophy of theirs.
To be specific, the War Cup (wartime League Cup) of 1943 was won by Blackpool, beating Arsenal 4-2 at Stamford Bridge. Pool claim the cup itself went back to North London with the Gunners after the Seasiders had to rush off because of an air raid. Blackpool fans have written to the Arsenal (having organised themselves into the ROCC: Return Our Cup Campaign) demanding the Cup back. Apparently people remember there being a trophy, but Arsenal claim there wasn't one, and maybe the memories are of the League Cup South which Arsenal had won to get to the final against Blackpool, and which the Arsenal players were photographed with before the game. See Seasiders.net's preview of the 1999 FA Cup tie for more.
