- RETIRED 13/01/04
- LEFT ARSENAL in summer of 2003 for Manchester_City.
Seaman replaced Peter Schmeichel between the sticks for Kevin Keegan's
side, and was replaced as Arsenal number 1 by Jens_Lehmann.
Seaman's last game for Arsenal was the 2003 FA Cup final
win over Southampton, when he captained the side in his 1000th professional appearance.
- other clubs: Leeds, Peterborough, Birmingham, QPR, Man City (after Arsenal).
- joined Arsenal: from QPR in May 1990 for £1.3million
- 563 Arsenal appearances: 405 league; 47 FA Cup; 38 Lge Cup; 38 Champs Lge; 18 Cup winners Cup; 11 UEFA Cup; 4 Charity Shld; 2 Super Cup.
- 75 caps for England
- Captained England against Moldova in 1997
World-Cup Qualifier at Wembley (4-0 win).
- Weight 83kg / 13st
- Height 191cm / 6'3"
- Arsenal debut: 3-0 league win over Wimbledon (A) 25/08/1990
- Career highlights:
Seaman had an excellent record in penalty shoot-outs. He will be particularly
remembered for the Cup-Winners Cup tie
away to Sampdoria on 20/04/95 featuring a spectacular diving save from Lombardo to take us through to the final.
He was superb for England during Euro96 (including the famous penalty save from McAllister just before Gascoigne's goal), and was named England player of the tournament.
In the last moments of one of his last games for Arsenal, Seaman kept us
ahead in the FA Cup semi final against Sheffield United on 13/04/2003, with a breathtaking save from Paul Peschisolido. "The best save I've ever seen", said Peter Schmeichel.

- Explanation of nickname (amongst the players) "H":
We've heard several explanations for this, the most imaginative
is that it comes from the character Rimmer in Red Dwarf,
whose "H"
on his forehead (indicating that he was a hologram)
earned him the nickname "goal-post head".
The real source is widely believed to be Rhyming Slang, with
H being short for "Harry Monk". However we've now been told
that Perry Groves has claimed that Harry is short for "Harry
the Head", and was started when the other players realised that
Dave's head is the same size as the rest of his body!
Many of the fans call him "Spunky". A Guardian "Passnotes" column
on the occasion of his England captaincy (see above) claimed that
his nickname amongst us unimaginative Arsenal fans was "goalie".
Well, we call him our goalie in the same way that every goalkeeper is
called "goalie", and no more. Grauniad writers, you've been had.
- Career lowlights:
Seaman was unfortunate to be the victim of several notorious flukes.
Nayim for Real Zaragoza, Ronaldinho for Brazil, that corner for Macedonia that went straight in (in his last England game) and Gascoigne for Tottenham in the FA Cup semi spring to mind.
He once broke a bone reaching for the TV remote (see Unusual Injuries page for more.
- Took over from Gary Lineker as a team captain on "They Think It's All Over"
