ArseWEB - number 1 David Seaman

England International Goalkeeper

  • born: Rotherham, 19th Sept 63
  • other clubs: Leeds, Peterborough, Birmingham, QPR.
  • joined Arsenal: from QPR in May 1990 for £1.3million
  • England International. Captained England against Moldova in 1997 World-Cup Qualifier at Wembley (4-0 win).
  • Nickname (amongst the players) is "H".
We've heard several explanations for this, the most imaginative is that it comes from the Hologram Rimmer in Red Dwarf, whose "H" on his forehead earned him the nickname "goal-post head".
The real source is widely believed to be Rhyming Slang, with H being short for "Harry Monk". However we've now been told that Perry Groves has claimed that Harry is short for "Harry the Head", and was started when the other players realised that Dave's head is the same size as the rest of his body!
Many of the fans call him "Spunky". A Guardian "Passnotes" column on the occasion of his England captaincy (see above) claimed that his nickname amongst us unimaginative Arsenal fans was "goalie". Well, we call him our goalie in the same way that every goalkeeper is called "goalie", and no more. Grauniad writers, you've been had.

  • FA Cup winner 1993, 1998
  • League Championship winner 1990-91, 1997-98
  • Coca-Cola (league) Cup winner 1993
  • European Cup-Winners Cup winner 1994
  • Charity Shield winner 1998
  • European Cup-Winners Cup runner-up 1995
  • England player of the Year: 1996 (thanks to his awesome keeping during Euro96)
  • Number 86 in the Sun "newspaper" centre-spread pull-out of "Top 100 Hunks", August 1997.
  • England keeper in all 4 games at France98
  • Winner: Celebrity "Ready Steady Cook". 17/11/98. In a head-to-head with unfunny Snooker celebrity John Virgo, Dave did some better cooking, presumably.
