- born: 1966 in Chadderton, Oldham
- other clubs: Man Utd, Crewe, Aston Villa, Bari, Juventus, Sampdoria.
- joined Arsenal: from Sampdoria on 10th July 1995 for £4.75 million.
- Arsenal debut:
- England International (& captain).
- Originally failed to make the grade at Man Utd, where Ron Atkinson gave him away to Crewe Alexandra
- Became a star when he replaced the injured England captain Bryan Robson in the Italia 90
World Cup competition. Scored the last second volleyed winner against Belgium in the second round
and has since made a habit of scoring important goals for England. He is the top scorer in the
current England setup.
- UEFA Cup winner with Juventus.
- Italian Cup winner with Sampdoria. Missed both legs of their classic 5-5 encounter with Arsenal in the
1994/95 Cup-Winners' Cup through suspension.
