Watching Arsenal in Africa

by Mitesh Shah

English Premiership, FA Cup and Worthington Cup coverage on African TV is ace. Only if you have satellite though! We also get live Italian and German games, and live Champions League coverage. In fact, English football is better covered than local football.

The satellite station is DStv (short for Digital Satellite Television). They have four sports channels, Supersport 1, Supersport 2, Supersport International and ESPN.

English football is shown on the Supersport Channels - usually Supersport 1 and Supersport International. We get the big Saturday game live every week - this is usually the same match that is advertised as the featured match on Match Of The Day back in England. A bit after that we get another recorded game from the afternoon's game - this game is usually one of those on Match Of The Day that get more that just brief highlights on air.

We get the Sunday, Monday and any mid-week games live - these are usually the ones that are being shown live on Sky (or whatever terrestrial channel is showing it, depending on the rights) back in England.

In addition, two hours before the kick-off of the Monday game they have an in-depth coverage of the weekend's football action from England and brief higlights of Scottish, German, Italian and South African football. This programme is known as "On The Ball". You might be interested to know that two ex-English League players host this show. The presenter is Gary Bailey (I'm sure you remember him - yep, the same one that let in Alan Sunderland's winner in the 1979 FA Cup Final). His co-presenter is Terry Paine MBE, formerly of Southampton. These two also analyse the live English games. This show starts at 2010 Central African Time.

Every Saturday there's another show "From The Goalmouth" that previews the forthcoming football action over the weekend. The timings for this show vary a bit because of other live events the channels carry.

There are also other highlight programmes and football documentaries that are shown on various days, shows like "Football Mundial", "Trans World Sport", etc. However I don't know when these are shown as I don't bother with them. My main concern is Arsene Wenger's mighty Gunners!

On ESPN there's at least one live Champions League match every match day, and a selection of others (recorded of course) at various times during the week that follows. Unfortunately Man Utd have been shown a lot in the CL out here - of course they've been involved in some high profile games in the CL so it is understandable.

The above details are for the satellite TV station DStv. This covers the whole of Africa, although not many people can afford satellite TV. (Rupe adds: see non-UK TV FAQ for links to pages listing pubs etc, there are also a few listed below). I don't know about coverage on each individual country's local TV stations.

The website for DStv is www.multichoice.co.za Just add 2 hours to GMT to get CAT (Central African Time).
