Arsenal - summary of the 1993/94 season

Recent History

Since George Graham became manager in 1986 Arsenal have won six major trophies. In 1989 the league championship returned to Highbury after an 18 year absence when Arsenal pipped Liverpool at the post on goals scored, by winning the deciding match at Anfield 2-0 in the most exciting finish to the league season ever witnessed in English football.

Another championship followed two years later when Arsenal finished as top scorers in the First Division. Two years ago Arsenal again made history by becoming the first team ever to win both domestic cups in the same season, and last year fulfilled an ambition for European success by winning the European Cup Winners' Cup against Parma of Italy in Copenhagen.

Review of the season

Domestic performance was, on the whole, disappointing. Too many draws early in the season, and an over-reliance on Ian Wright for goals led to Manchester United and Blackburn pulling away in the League and Arsenal finally finished fourth. There were some good performances, usually away from home, but Arsenal also failed to defend both domestic cup titles, with 4th round exits to Aston Villa and Bolton. The latter in the FA Cup was particularly disappointing.

However, the season was more than salvaged by Arsenal's European campaign which culminated in May, with triumph in the Cup Winners' Cup final in Copenhagen over the Italian holders, Parma.
