As Good As It Gets

Great Gunners Glories

front cover It makes a really nice change to review a video which is such a pleasure to watch. The end-of-season review tapes, in their focus on goals only and need to cram the whole season into one tape, means that they often end up a bit dull.

They need to show you the goals from the boring games as well as the exciting ones, or worse: the ones you'd rather forget. And all too often the really exciting things which you half-remember aren't there at all.

But here's a tape which I guarantee will be watched more than once by every Gooner who buys it.

And a nice feature for us is the fact that the years tally quite well with the years of Arseweb's existence. 5 out of the 7 ganmes have match reports here on the site (see below for links)

What you get is highlights from 7 classic games, with "talking head" comments for each, from a player who made a telling contribution. One slightly unnecessary quirk is the way that the games aren't in chronological order.

Tottenham 1996 (see Arseweb match report)
Comments from Dennis Bergkamp.

Possibly the most unforgettable of unforgettable derby games, with one of the most dramatic finishes and a true sense of justice.

Spurs got a scandalous equaliser directly from a throw-in which should have gone back to Arsenal. John Lukic had clearly thrown it out to allow treatment to Vieira.

But Arsenal grabbed 2 late goals through Adams and Bergkamp, with a classic bit of audacious Ian Wright creating the latter

Liverpool 1992 (predates Arseweb)
Comments from Ray Parlour.

It was Ray's debut season, and the match features a great bit of Parlour persistence, leading to a goal for Super-Swede Anders Limpar.

Sampdoria 1995 (see Arseweb match report)
Comments from David Seaman.

This one holds really special memories for me. I was on holiday, staying with friends in Spain, for the 2 weeks between the first and second legs. The first leg saw Sampdoria score 2 away goals at Highbury to come away with a 3-2 deficit and it looked decidedly dodgy for the second.

I got back home just a couple of hours before the second leg, and settled down to watch it on the telly.

But before that there was the FA cup semi-final. Tottenham had played Everton while I was away and I'd set my video to tape it and managed to avoid finding out the result. So before the Arsenal game I had the pleasure of watching Everton (and Limpar in particular) destroy Tottneham 4-1 (? I think).

And straight after that there was our 3-2 loss in Italy, featuring Stefan Scwarz's late equalising free kick and that unforgettable penalty shoot-out. Not only did Seaman save 3, but with a true feel for the dramatic he saved the best till last, and outrageous stop with the "wrong" hand from Lombardo.

Probably the most enjoyable continuous 4 hours of football watching of my life!

Chelsea 1999 (see Arseweb match report)
Comments from Kanu.

Two nil down at Stamford Bridge. Kanu scores 2 to level it, then the Ogron Ed de Goey comes out along the goal line and lets him through to score the winner from an impossible angle. Lovely.

Leeds 1993 (predates Arseweb)
Comments from Alan Smith

On the way to the cup double, featuring more Wrighty magic and John Lukic on the wrong side.

Man Utd 1997 (see Arseweb match report)
Comments from David Platt.

A nice memory of Anelka (he even smiles when celebrating his opener). A ridiculous goal from Vieira. And that late header to win it from Platty. In his comments Dave talks about how he chose Arsenal to come back to England to. Good choice mate, and thank you. Platt's Arsenal careeer may not have been the longest or most memorable ever, but he played a crucial role in that double season.

Everton 1998 (see Arseweb match report)
...speaking of which.

This one's all about Steve Bould coming off the bench to join the party in midfield, Tony Adams charging upfield, Bouldy's pass finding him and then that (left-foot!) volley.
