Preview
- A Werder caution
Don't be complacent. A 2-0 lead is good, and one which we would obviously
hope to be enough to see us through. But whatever they're saying publicly,
Werder will fancy their chances. In the previous 2 rounds they lost the first
leg away from home, 1-0 to Parma and 3-0 to Lyon. In each case they
overturned the defeicit in the second leg in Bremen (3-1 against
Parma and 4-0 against Lyon). So, despite appearances to the contrary
last Thursday, they are a team capable of scoring goals.
- Arsenal team news
Keeper Dave Seaman may have to sit this one out. He missed
the derby match on sunday with an apparent recurrence of
his neck problem. Dennis Bergkamp will not be travelling to
Bremen for the game. His availability for the Premiership match
against Coventry on Sunday is too important for that.
Martin Keown is, however, hopeful again that he'll be able to play.
He was expecting to be k for the Tottenham game but the hand
took a knock in training shortly before.
update Wednesday
Looks like there's a fair chance of both Keown and
Seaman returning.
update Thursday
Less promising than yesterday, today's news is that Keown is
unlikely to start and Seaman faces a fitness test. But emmanuel
Petit should return to partner Vieira in midfield which would release
Grimandi for defensive duties. It's been revealed that Bergkamp
was happy to drive to Bremen for the game, but Arsene Wenger decided against
it, saying it's better to have him 100% for one game than 80% for two.
Which is good news as it suggests that Dennis is close to full fitness now.
- Werder_Bremen team news
Peruvian striker Claudio Pizarro is expected to return having
missed last week's game with a groin strain. He's still not 100% fit,
and missed Werder's defeat at Munich 1860 (Stefan Malz's old club)
on Sunday. But coach Thomas Schaaf knows he needs more power up front
(having failed to get a single shot on target in the first leg,
when Brasilian Ailton was rather isolated up front).
Pizarro, who was signed from Alianza (of Lima) just after the start
of the season, is seen as something of a talismanic figure. The tall
21yr old scored their 4th and winning goal in the 2nd leg against
Lyon. Marco Bode could play a more attacking role too in a 3-man
strike force.
