Arsenal win 6-3 on aggregate
Nantes, Thursday 9th December 1999
UEFA Cup 3rd round 2nd leg
Preview
- Arsenal team news
Patrick Vieira returns to midfield which is
just as well because we'll be without Ray Parlour.
It's possible that Emmanuel Petit will be rested,
with say Stephen Hughes and/or Freddie Ljungberg?
coming in.
I don't know if there's any chance of Keown returning
yet. If not, Grimandi may well play in central
defence as Upson has ruptured a cruciate ligament and
will miss the rest of the season. Arsene Wenger was probabkly
hoping to be able to rest Tony Adams but maybe he won't now.
There's a chance that he'll feel that 3-0 is safe enough to play
young Rhys Weston, who did so well against Boro last
week.
We shouldn't rule out the possibility of more of our
recent young debutants getting a game.
Update Wednesday
All the papers and websites are now reporting that, as suggested
above, Wenger was planning to rest Tony Adams and
he has abandoned that plan in the light of the Upson injury.
Martin Keown is not ready to return from his calf injury,
some sources suggest he'll be back for the Wimbledon game on
Saturday week, if not the Blackpool FA Cup tie on Monday.
- Nantes_Atlantique team news
Striker Oliveir Monterrubio pulled aleg in Nantes'
match against St Etienne last Friday and is said to be out
of the Arsenal match.
According to this report (in French), Nantes have acted to ease a
2-and-a-half year "offensive food shortage" by signing one of the
best French strikers around (according to the report anyway):
Alain Caveglia (103 goals in
302 matches) from Lyon. But he won't
be eligible for the UEFA Cup.
Up front we can expect to see the hapless Ahamada again,
and can only hope that he fails to be any more hapful.
Midfielders Devineau and Piocelle are expected to
join Monterrubio on the missing list.
- UK TV/Radio coverage
Not sure what to make of this, all I've seen from Sky is that all
3 UEFA Cup matches involving English clubs are on Sky Sports News
(digital only). But some other TV listings seem to think that
our match is on Sky Sports 3. Can anyone give us
a definitive answer? The fact that, for example,
Scene
One have the SS3 programme starting at 8pm, when
Arsenal kick off at 7.15, leads me to believe the worst.
According to listings, there doesn't appear to be a highlights
programme on terrestrial telly later on either.
We're hopeful that Capital Gold Radio at least will cover the game though.
Update Thursday
A helpful man at Sky has confirmed that the game is, sadly,
exclusively on Sky Sports News.
- non-UK TV coverage
- France: live on Eurosport France (6.15 CET). Apparently
papers in ireland are saying that the game can also be picked up
there on "French channel TV5". Don't know any more as yet but
am trying to find out.
- No info as yet... presumably it's on in France somewhere?
You'd think that if UK channels can't be arsed to show it that
foreign channels wouldn't either, but experience teaches
us to assume no such thing! However it does look for example like
in the US you can see Newcatsle or Leeds' matches but not
ours. Give the match scores this is not altogether unreasonable.
