The Dell, Saturday 3rd April 1999
FA Carling Premiership
Preview
- Beam-back to Highbury
This match will be shown live on the Jumbotron at Highbury. As
usual, it's £10 a head (£5 for children), cash only on
the day. The North Stand gates open at 2.00pm.
- Arsenal team news
Emmanuel Petit starts his 3-match suspension.
Remi Garde, Stephen Hughes, and Matthew Upson
are currently injured, plus there's the twisted ankle picked up
by Lee Dixon against Coventry. But there's still 2 weeks
till the game so hopefully some of these will be fit in time.
Against this there's the fact that some of our players will
inevitably come back injured from the forthcoming Internationals.
update Friday 2nd: Alex Manninger has dislocated a wrist
(stopping a shot from Dave Seaman in training) so John Lukic
will be the cover for H on the bench.
Hughes and Garde are
definitely out, the former still has a cast on his arm and the
latter has another week at least till full recovery from his
ankle injury. Tony Adams was due to take a fitness test
today, there's no news of the result yet. The bad news is
that Bergkamp came back from the Holland match with flu,
and Overmars is a big doubt with infected blisters on
both feet (yuk!). The Dutch duo's problems mean that Wenger is
planning to defy FIFA and withhold Kanu from the Nigerian
game next Saturday. This comes from Football365 (see NewsReel).
However, AFCi's preview doesn't mention the Overmars problem, and
says Bergkamp is "doubtful" rather than definitely out.
- Southampton team news
Matt Le Tissier (who isn't the player he was, but still managed
to turn the game round for a draw when he trundled on in the home tie
back in September) and
Chris Marsden (who he?) are both out suspended, as
is Moroccan midfielder Kachoul who signed from Lens
on 1st Jan 2001 according to the Official Saints site players page, but from
Metz earlier this season according to other sources.
Keeper Paul Jones suffered concussion playing for Wales
in midweek so is also a doubt. This Marching In page appears to be a better bet for good
info than the official site! They expect a tight 4-4-2 formation.

The Dell, Saturday 3rd April 1999
FA Carling Premiership
Sorry, couldn't make it to the Dell or Highbury today, so details will
have to wait till later.
In brief:
As suspected Bergkamp and Overmars didn't play, and Wenger
went for an attacking set of replacements with both Kanu
and Diawara playing with Nicolas Anelka.
Adams did play however, and Ljungberg came into Parlour's
position on the right as Ray was deputising for Manu alongside
Vieira.
Kanu missed our best chance, cleared off the line from 6 yards by
Benali, and Seaman foiled Hughes at the other end with a
fantastic save. Hughes also hit a post.
Arsenal failed to make progress on Manchester United, on a day when they
also could only manage an away draw (at Wimbledon). But wins for
Chelsea
and Leeds mean that things closed up somewhat at the top.
