Holland

Arsenal players in the Dutch team

Dennis Bergkamp
  • Squad number: 8
  • age 29. 57 caps coming into the tournament
  • At the start of the tournament, still suffering with the hamstring injury that kept him out of the last two matches of the season and the cup final. Said to be fit enough to be on the bench for the opener at least. If Holland can impress without him in the early stages it'll bode well for their chances with him later on.
  • came off the bench against Beligum
  • started against South Korea
Marc Overmars
  • Squad number: 14
  • age 25. 37 caps coming into the tournament
  • played against Belgium
  • played against South Korea

Belgium. 0-0. Saturday June 13th
Overmars played the whole 90 minutes and had a decent game, but Holland failed to create enough clear cut chances against a Belgium team committed to defending. Not unreasonable having lost twice ot the Dutch in qualifying. Bergkamp came off the bench and looked like he hadn't played for a while. He had one half chance in the box which he put wide under challenge.

South Korea. 5-0 win. Saturday June 20th
Bergkamp and Overmars both played in this majestic win, the most one-sided match of the World Cup so far. Bergkamp started his firts match since the home game against Derby when he got the hamstring injury. He came off for Van Hoojdonk in the second half, but not before making his considerable mark on the game and the tournament. Early on he set up a great (missed) chance for Wonk, after doing some sort of circus trick with the ball that left several Korean defenders shaking their haeads in amazement. He had a good left foot shot from the edge of the area that beat the goalie but went just over. Overmars got into the scoring with Holland's second, a great right foot goal cutting inside his marker inside the area, a very familiar sight to Arsenal fans and reminiscent of one of his very first goals for us (was it the first?). In the second half Bergkamp forced a save and then got it back for a second attemp which he chipped just over with the goalie out of his box. Then he scored after another wonderful piece of skill on the edge of the area, switching the ball between his feet as he turned and came round 2 defenders before a classy controlled toe-poke finish. He had another chance which he drilled just wide, and might just be thinking that he could have practicallt sewn up the golden boot in this game. Overmars had a good game too, cropping up on the right as well as the left, and it was a pinpoint cross from the right which found Van Hoojdonk's head for the 4th goal.
Mexico. 2-2. Thursday June 25th
Yugoslavia. 2-1 win. Monday June 29th
