Valencia vs Arsenal

Valencia, Tuesday 17th April 2001

UEFA Champions League quarter-final 2nd leg

Preview

  • Arsenal team news
The big question, as always, is "will Bergkamp travel"? The answer, as usual, will probably be "no". But things are complicated by the fact that Nigeria have called Kanu up for a match on the 21st. This means that under the 5 day rule, they can insist on Kanu's presence for training, from the day before the Valencia match. Arsenal will presumably be trying to get him released to play for us on the 17th. If this can't be done, we'll really need Bergkamp. It's not too far to Valencia. I'd recommend the overnight train.

We have 6 players in the precarious position of being one yellow card away from a suspension: Vieira, Henry, Keown, Cole, Lauren, Ljungberg. Of these, Keown is currently on 4 yellows, the others on 2 (1 game bans are incurred at 3, 5, and 7 bookings under UEFA rules. No idea what happens after 7!)

    update Wednesday 11th
Midas Soccer are today reporting that Nigeria will allow Kanu to play for us and travel to Sierra Leone after the game.
Which is particularly good news, as the word is that Bergkamp is unlikely to be fit in time, even if Wenger would have sent him.

    matchday update
Silvinho is a doubt, he was due for a scan on a calf injury today. But Cole would probably have started anyway. There are suggestions that Edu may also have a problem.

  • Valencia team news
Kily Gonzalez is out with a torn leg muscle picked up in Valencia's win over Rayo Vallecano.
Ayala's booking in the first leg has been overturned by UEFA, so he's not suspended for the second leg after all.
    matchday update
Kily's replacement Vicente may now be missing with an injury picked up in Valencia's league match at the weekend. Like Arsenal, Valencia lost at home unexpectedly.
